Professor Oluwaseun O. Omotayo currently serves as Head of the Department of Sports and Exercise Medical Sciences at the School of Sports and Exercise Medicine (SSEM), UHAS.
Education
He attended Nigeria’s premier university, University of Ibadan, where he studied Physical and Health Education (1980-1983). He was admitted into the University Postgraduate School in 1985, where he obtained a master’s degree and also obtained Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in 1990 with specialisation in Sports Psychology. He was appointed a sports coach at the University of Ibadan Sports Council in 1986, during which time the University emerged Overall Winner of the Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA) games.
Work Experience
Prof. Omotayo joined the Department of Sports Science and Health Education of the Olabisi Onabanjo University in 1987, where he rose meritoriously to Professorial grade in 1998. In 2002, he was appointed Professor in the Department of Exercise and Sports Technology, Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya. He also worked at the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana.
He was on several occasions an invited academic on curriculum matters to the University of Northampton, Northamptonshire, and the University of the West of Scotland, Paisley Scotland both in the United Kingdom.
He was the consultant Sports Psychologist attached to the Flying Eagles of Nigeria during the 1989 FIFA Junior World Cup Competition held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, during which time Nigeria played in the finals of the FIFA competition for the first time in history. He served the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS) as a resource person on the development and implementation of the ECOWAS Regional Sports Policy Document.
Awards
Prof. Omotayo was one of the recipients of the Olympic Researcher Award at the London 2012 Olympic Games. He is the first Nigerian to win the International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation Sports & Dance (ICHPER.SD) outstanding Sports Leadership Award in 2005 at the Anniversary World Congress in Istanbul, Turkey. He was a recipient of the Special Recognition Award of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1987 for successfully rendering psychological services to the Nigerian Contingent at the All-African Games held in Nairobi, Kenya.
Memberships
He is currently the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Sports Psychology Association of Nigeria (SPAN), where he was National President between 1988 and 2004. He is also the Vice-President (Continental) of Africa Sports Management Association. He is the current Coordinator of the Africa Sports Research Network (ASRN) and the current President of the Africa Students Football Union (AFSU).
He previously served as a member ICHPER.SD Sports Psychology Commission. He was External Assessor for Professorial Rank, University of Calabar, Nigeria and External Examiner (Ph.D. Exams) Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Nigeria. Prof. Oluwaseun Omotayo was a member of the Governing Council of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State of Nigeria.
Publications
He has about 45 published works to his credit in local and international Journals and has attended several local and International Conferences, including Sports Psychology Professional Management Sessions in the Commonwealth Region. He is a Consulting Editor of the Africa Journal of Health, Physical Education and Sports. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Multi-Disciplinary Studies and Sports Research (IJMSRE); Consulting Editor of Journal of Africa Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance (AFAHPER-SD); and Consulting Editor of the Journal of Nigeria Association of Sports Science and Medicine (JONASM).
