Academic Structure 

The School of Sports and Exercise Medicine (SSEM) is a pioneering academic and professional hub dedicated to advancing athlete performance, sport injury rehabilitation, physical health and well-being tailored through rigorous academic and practical training for excellence. The School integrates science, practice and research to shape the future of sport, athletes and physical well-being as a preventive health approach in mitigating the rising menace of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Ghana, Africa and beyond.  

The School is one of the Schools within the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) established in 2019 with four (4) dynamic Departments.  

 

1. Department of Sports and Exercise Medical Sciences  

This Department focuses on the clinical and physiological foundations of                  sports medicine. Students and researchers explore injury prevention, exercise      physiology, biomechanics and medical interventions that optimize performance     and recovery. By bridging laboratory science with applied practice, it produces     professionals who safeguard athletes’ health     while advancing evidence-based         medical care.

2.  Department of Sports Nutrition  

Nutrition is the cornerstone of performance and recovery. This Department trains         specialists to design dietary strategies that enhance endurance, strength and         resilience. Research emphasizes culturally relevant nutrition solutions for athletes         and communities, ensuring that science-driven dietary practices translate into         sustainable health outcomes.  

 

3. Department of Sports Psychology and Rehabilitation  

Performance is as much mental as it is physical. This Department integrates          psychology, counseling and rehabilitation sciences to support athletes’ mental     health, resilience and     recovery from injury. By combining cutting-edge     psychological research with practical rehabilitation strategies, it empowers     athletes to thrive both on and off the field.  

 

4.  Department of Sports Marketing and Management  

Sport is not only about performance, they are also a global industry. This         Department equips students with leadership, management and marketing skills     to drive sports organizations,     events and brands. Graduates become innovators     who can transform sports into engines of economic growth, community     development and international visibility.
